Good Morning SNOAC Community,

 

I hope you have been well! As a reminder, our next meeting is Thursday, May 9th at 10am and will be available in a hybrid format (virtual and in person). Community Updates

  • ***Southern Nevada Community Needs Assessment***

    • About: The Southern Nevada Health District and Nevada Institute for Children’s Research and Policy at UNLV are conducting a community needs assessment to better understand the barriers to overdose prevention in Clark County. As a member of the community that provides services to people who use drugs, we would like to invite you to participate. The results of the community needs assessment will provide insights on how to best direct funding to reduce overdose and keep our community safe and healthy.

    • How to participate: You can participate in the community needs assessment in one or both of the following ways:

      • Complete a brief, 15-minute, one-on-one confidential phone interview with one of our staff. If you are interested in participating, please email Aaliyah Goodie at aaliyah.goodie@unlv.edu or call 702-895-1040 and ask for Dawn Davidson or Aaliyah Goodie.

      • Help recruit clients from your program/agency who have lived experience with drug use to complete a brief survey. If you are interested in this option, please email Rebecca Cruz-Nanez at cruz-nanez@snhd.org to learn more.  

    • Deadline to participate is April 30th.

  • **Save the Date** 2024 Southern Nevada Substance Misuse and Overdose Prevention Summit

    • Date: Thursday, August 1st from 8am to 5pm

    • Where: The Tuscany Suites

    • Theme: To tackle the overdose epidemic effectively and compassionately, our community must be attentive to the needs of people who use drugs and their loved ones. It is crucial to revise, adjust, or introduce laws, programs, and initiatives in response to emerging research, evidence, and best practices. This endeavor demands flexibility, growth, and a willingness to embrace fresh perspectives and innovative approaches. Be a part of the 2024 Southern Nevada Substance Misuse and Overdose Prevention Summit where we will focus on addressing and prioritizing the evolving needs of the community in response to the changing landscape of the overdose crisis.

  • Overdose Prevention Training

  • Harm Reduction 101: The Basics of Harm Reduction

    • When: Tuesday, May 21st from 8am to 12p

    • Where: Virtual via Webex

    • Cost: Free

    • About: This interactive adult training provides participants with an in-depth overview of harm reduction concepts. This workshop provides a foundation in the philosophy, principles, and practices of harm reduction in the context of the United States. Participants will learn more tools to understand the different types and levels of harm. Our goal is that through guided discussion and activities, participants will develop practical skills and increased knowledge to use in their work with people who currently are or formerly have used drugs, with an emphasis on injection drug use.

  • SPF Application for Prevention Success Training (SAPST)

    • When: June 11th-14th from 8:30a to 4:30p daily

    • Where: UNR Cooperative Extension (8050 Paradise Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89123)

    • Cost: Free

    • About: Grounded in current research and SAMHSA’s Strategic Prevention Framework, this foundational training helps practitioners develop the knowledge and skills needed to plan, implement, and evaluate effective, data-driven programs and practices that reduce behavioral health disparities and improve wellness. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Define behavioral health and its relationship to substance misuse; Describe the Strategic Prevention Framework, SAMHSA’s five-step planning model; Identify the needs of vulnerable populations in order to improve cultural competency and more effectively address behavioral health disparities; and Discuss effective approaches to collaborating across sectors to sustain prevention outcomes

  • Harm Reduction 201: Understanding Drug Related Stigma

    • When: Tuesday, June 25th from 8a-12p

    • About: This training takes a critical look at the history of the substance misuse movement and its impact on recovery and health equity in our community. This workshop will introduce the concepts of social inequalities faced by people who use drugs, the stigma they experience, and how this impacts their ability to access services.

National

  • 2024 American Association for the Treatment of Opioid Dependence, Inc. Conference: “Treating Opioid Use Disorder: So Much More Than Medication”

    • When: May 18-22 varying start and end times each day

    • Where: Planet Hollywood (3667 Las Vegas Blvd S, Las Vegas, NV 89109)

    • Cost: $500 (Price increases Jan 31)

    • About: The workshop lineup will include state of the art information on diverse areas of focus such as patient care and best practices, building community partnerships and collaborations, public policy and regulatory changes, workforce development, quality assurance, and financial reimbursement. There will be workshops that focus on emerging treatment trends and developments such as the fentanyl epidemic, mobile opioid treatment programs, regulatory changes, expansion of treatment services in rural areas, integrating treatment with the corrections systems, and integrating harm reduction initiatives. For those newer to the field or those who want a refresher on the basics, we have once again included a “Foundations” track which will include selections on the fundamentals of medication assisted treatment.
